Duties Summary : Performs professional planning work in support of the City's Historic Preservation Program and the O'ahu Historic Preservation Commission. The position assists in the review and evaluation of development proposals, building permits, land use permits, and environmental documents to ensure compliance with historic preservation laws and regulations, including Hawai'i Revised Statutes Chapter 6E and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The position conducts research and analysis related to historic and cultural resources; prepares technical reports, correspondence, and recommendations; provides staff support to the O'ahu Historic Preservation Commission; and coordinates with government agencies, applicants, and the public regarding the identification, protection, and treatment of historic properties. Performs other related duties as required.

Training and Experience : A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in city planning, architecture, architectural history, archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, or a related field.

Illustrative Examples of Work : Assists in the review and evaluation of building permit applications, construction plans, and development proposals for potential impacts to historic properties and cultural resources; applies and interprets historic preservation laws, regulations, and guidelines, including Hawai'i Revised Statutes Chapter 6E and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act; conducts research and analysis on historic properties, cultural landscapes, and historic districts using archival materials, maps, reports, and other sources; performs site visits and field investigations to document historic resources and assess potential project impacts; prepares technical memoranda, staff reports, correspondence, and recommendations regarding project compliance with historic preservation requirements; provides staff support to the O'ahu Historic Preservation Commission by preparing reports, coordinating agenda items, and assisting with meeting materials; responds to inquiries from property owners, applicants, consultants, agencies, and the public regarding historic preservation requirements and review procedures; coordinates with federal, state, and county agencies regarding environmental review and historic preservation compliance; evaluates data and concepts from technical journals, bulletins, books, and professional guidance and prepares interpretive reports regarding their application to local planning and preservation issues.
