Job Description

Summary Serves as a Supervisory Criminal Investigator and Senior Special Agent in the Office of Investigations (OI), Office of the Inspector General (OIG), Social Security Administration (SSA), responsible for planning, coordinating, overseeing, and directing investigations. Investigative oversight includes violations of Title 18, United States Code, involving fraud. Supervises a staff of investigators in a specific geographical or functional area. Duties Oversees, coordinates, manages, and directs the full range of criminal investigations. Directs and coordinates research and analysis of cases to determine the applicable laws and the implementing regulations which were violated. Manages and oversees the reporting of investigative findings for prosecutive and management officials. Assists the Special Agent in Charge with the planning of investigative work. Serves as a liaison with Federal prosecutorial and investigative offices for all investigations. Provides expert advice and assistance to Department of Justice attorneys in preparation of cases for grand juries and other criminal proceedings. Plans, organizes, and provides direction to a staff with respect to case development, investigative techniques, and methodology. Qualifications Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS‑13 level, or equivalent, related to the work of the position and equipped with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties. This experience must include one of the following: Leading and providing technical guidance on a broad range of criminal investigations. Experience demonstrating criminal investigative techniques, rules of criminal procedures, and/or laws. Preparing information for presentation to high‑level agency officials and officials of other federal law‑enforcement agencies. Leading or managing a project and/or team. Applicants for promotion must have at least 52 weeks at GS‑13. Time‑in‑grade requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Physical and medical requirements: The duties involve moderate to arduous physical exertion, including walking, standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity, vision, hearing, and overall health must meet specified standards. The selected employee will be required to complete a pre‑appointment physical examination, pass a firearms qualification, and attend a course of instruction on the proper use of oleoresin capsicum spray (OCS). The position is covered by the special retirement provision for Federal Law Enforcement Officers (FLEO). Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and not yet 37 years of age on the date of appointment. Additional requirements: Must successfully complete the 12‑week Criminal Investigator Program training course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), Glynco, Georgia. The position is a mobile work environment requiring routine travel for investigations and other duties. A mobility agreement must be signed to accept relocation to other geographic locations if required.
